Hiking Itinerary with Riverside Camps
The Galice Resort, Galice, Oregon. Meeting Time: 8:30 a.m. the first day of your trip. Trip Departure: Approximately 9:30 a.m. the first day of your trip. We return to Galice by late afternoon on the last day of your trip.
We meet at the Galice Resort, a full-service facility with a lodge, cabins, restaurant, and small general store, perched quietly on the banks of the Rogue. It is located thirty minutes from downtown Grants Pass and one hour northwest of Medford, Oregon. Medford has an airport that is served by commercial airlines. Please plan to arrive in Galice or Grants Pass the night before your trip and to depart Galice after 6 p.m. on the last day of your trip.
Your trip leader and shuttle vehicle will meet you in the restaurant at Galice Resort, at 8:30 a.m., on the first day of your trip. There he or she will distribute waterproof “dry” bags, answer any last minute questions, and help assure that your car is parked in the secure parking area. Following this introduction you will pack your camp clothes, sleeping bag, etc., into the dry bag (be sure to keep any items you want during the day out of this dry bag,). Additional dry bags with sleeping pads and tents will already be rigged on the rafts. You will then participate in a group orientation before boarding the shuttle vehicle for the scenic few minute drive to the trailhead at Graves Creek to start your self-guided hike. After two miles you reach Rainie Falls, a thundering drop where you may see salmon leaping to continue their migration upstream. Soon after Rainie we will meet you for lunch. We reach camp late in the afternoon after a wonderful first day on the trail. We make camp on a sandy beach or in a riverside meadow, enjoy an afternoon snack and drink, and unwind as the guides make a delicious dinner. This evening we listen to the river and share tales of the Rogue as twilight comes to the canyon.
Each day on the Rogue follows a similar routine although no two days are alike. Breakfast, a multi-course affair with hot cowboy coffee or campfire cocoa, is served as the sun creeps into the canyon. After breaking camp and loading the rafts the guides will see you off for another unforgettable day of hiking along the Rogue. You will marvel at the rock formations and watch eagle and osprey as they circle overhead. Depending on the day you may visit Zane Grey’s former writing getaway, hike up to one of the many side creek waterfalls, or visit a remote wilderness lodge. Lunch is set up each day around noon, with more than enough delicious food to energize you for the afternoon on the trail. In the late afternoon we again set up camp in another beautiful and secluded wild place. The early evening hours provide time to fish, hike, read a book, enjoy happy hour snacks and beverages, or take a nap. Dinner is prepared and served each evening with style and flair. You will eat to your heart’s content meals that our guests have been described as the finest outdoor cuisine imaginable. The campfire lights the night sky and the sound of the river lulls us to sleep.
After breakfast and breaking camp you will hike on to meet your guides and enjoy lunch on the banks of this magical river. The guides will meet you at the take-out, near the tiny town of Agness, mid-afternoon. Following a salute to a great trip, our shuttle vehicle meets us and we head over the hills back to Galice Resort. This steep and curvy drive (approximately 2.5-3 hours) is along the ridge tops of the Rogue river canyon and affords panoramic views of the Siskiyou Mountains. We reach Galice late in the afternoon. Note: the end point at Agness is approximately thirty-five miles from the Oregon coast. Those with travel plans that include visiting the coast may want to have their vehicles shuttled to the take-out point as Agness is closer to the coast than Galice. There is a fee for this service.
